Frankovka 2021 Martin Albus: a juicy wine for roast pork and veal

Frankovka is a variety with deep roots in Croatia’s viticultural tradition, especially in the continental regions. Its potential is exceptional, but full phenolic ripeness of the fruit is essential to strike the balance between structure and elegance. Only then are the tannins ripe, the acids pronounced and the extract high. They are keenly aware of this at PP Orahovica, and thanks to that approach they consistently produce Frankovka of high quality.

A bottle of Frankovka 2021 from PP Orahovica's premium line, beside a glass of ruby-red wine.

Martin Albus is PP Orahovica’s premium line of wines, and this Frankovka 2021 is one of the finer examples of how to approach the variety well. It is deep ruby in colour and of medium density. The aromatic profile is quite layered and predominantly fruit-driven. Red fruit leads — sour cherry, cherry and redcurrant — while piquant, spicy notes of clove, cinnamon and white pepper emerge from behind. The palate is powerful yet elegant; 13 percent alcohol and high extract lend a firm structure, while its pronounced freshness and ripe tannins hold everything in perfect balance.

It is markedly juicy, with a long and memorable finish — ready to drink, yet with significant ageing potential. At the table it is highly versatile, above all with roast pork and veal.
